A shop offering bespoke cartographies inserts into
Märkerstrasse in Halle an der Saale. Its design based
on an observatory, the shop extends through a gateway
into the inner courtyard of a historic building. The first
section consists of two tubes, inserted into each other
like a telescope. The shop window closes them off from
the street. The entrance is at the side. The first tube
includes an opening in the wall on the left, to provide
space for the cash register. In the second, smaller section,
illuminated signs on the right explain the processes. Finally,
the space opens up into a large round room with a dome.
Steps rise up around the centre of the room, their treads
undulating like contour lines. This landscape houses two
printers and screens. Finished prints feed out onto levels
functioning as work tables. These levels highlight the
window reaching to the centre of the dome. Finished
in light metal, the dome contrasts with the dark metal
tubes fitted with neon yellow strip-lighting.
